BBC to stop using AI to promote 'Doctor Who' due to viewer complaints
BBC
The British Broadcasting Corporation BBC will stop using artificial intelligence to advertise the popular science fiction series "Doctor Who" after receiving complaints from viewers about the use of this technology.
Here's What We Know
The BBC's marketing teams had previously conducted a "little experiment", using generative AI to compose the text of two promotional emails and mobile push notifications. The aim was to draw attention to new episodes of Doctor Who. However, the corporation subsequently received complaints from viewers about the use of AI for this purpose.
"We followed all BBC editorial processes and the final text was approved by a member of the marketing team before being sent out," the BBC said.
However, the company has no plans to repeat the use of AI to promote Doctor Who.
The corporation did not disclose the exact number of complaints received, but there probably weren't too many. The BBC initially positioned AI as "a great opportunity to accelerate the creation of additional marketing material".
When We Can Expect It
The new season of Doctor Who launches in May on the BBC and will be available on the Disney+ streaming service for the first time. Last week, the writers unveiled a new trailer for the series.
