Thieves in Canada use AirTags to steal cars
Thieves in Montreal, Canada, have recently started using Apple AirTags to facilitate vehicle thefts.
Here's What We Know
Two Burlington residents found Apple AirTags in their cars after returning from trips to Montreal. This is just the latest in a series of incidents that have been reported by police. One of the victims said that after returning from Montreal, he was warned that his car could be tracked. He was able to locate the device, which was placed in the front grille of his car, thanks to the AirTag functionality and his phone.
The cyber analyst noted that there has been a noticeable increase in the activity of criminals in recent years. It is suspected that AirTags are used to track cars for the purpose of stealing them and selling them abroad. There is also the possibility that these trackers could be used to mark vehicles in attempts to smuggle drugs across the border.
People who are concerned about possible tracking with AirTag should be aware of the built-in security features. AirTag sends an alert to an iPhone if it is out of range of the person who owns it. Additionally, Android users can detect unknown Bluetooth trackers such as AirTags with Apple's Tracker Detect app.
