10 million plastic bottles: how Samsung created the Galaxy S24 series

In honour of Earth Day 2024, Samsung has shared information on how the company is reducing its carbon footprint. Specifically, with the new Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has been able to use recycled aluminium, glass and plastic both inside and outside of the devices.

Here's What We Know

The company claims that by the end of 2024, the S24 series will be able to use around 110 tonnes of recycled aluminium. In addition, Samsung has a target to use 100 tonnes of recycled plastic by 2025, which is equivalent to nearly 10 million empty plastic bottles.

The effort is part of Samsung's continuous manufacturing process. For example, in 2022, the company used recycled, discarded fishing nets to create components for its Galaxy S22 series. Samsung has also worked with the United Nations Development Programme to strengthen its sustainable practices.

However, despite Samsung's transparency about the business decisions it has made, questions remain about e-waste. For example, multiple users have noted a lack of backwards compatibility in the Galaxy Tab S9 released in 2023, especially in terms of accessories. Additional ways Samsung can reduce its carbon footprint should probably be considered, especially given the contribution of accessories to the problem.
