A South Korean woman fell in love with Ilon Musk's dipfake and gave him $50k

In South Korea, a scammer used an Elon Musk dipface to fall in love with a woman and swindle $50,000 from her.

Here's What We Know

The woman wished to remain anonymous, but shared her story with the media. According to her, last year in Instagram, an account that was similar to the profile of Ilon Musk was added to her as a friend. The woman immediately sensed something amiss, but the scammer was convincing.

He shared photos of Musk at work and shots of his official ID. The fake Elon Musk also talked about his children, life and work at Tesla and SpaceX.

The trust was further strengthened during a video call during which the scammer used a dipface. He confessed his love to his victim, and she ended up falling in love with her interlocutor.

After a while, the scammer offered the woman to become an investor, claiming that he was enriching his loyal fans. She transferred $50,000 to him, after which she realised she had been scammed.

Such love scams are very common. For example, in 2022, because of these tricks, the U.S. residents lost 1.3 billion dollars.
