South Korea fires warning shot as North Korean soldiers cross border
South Korea's military said it fired warning shots on 9 June, Sunday, when a group of North Korean soldiers crossed the border and the demilitarised zone.
Here's What We Know
The South Korean border guards issued a warning and fired shots in the air, and the North Korean soldiers returned to their side of the fortified border.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the two Koreas after North Korea launched more than 1,000 garbage-filled balloons across the border. At the same time, South Korea has resumed propaganda broadcasts that were suspended in 2018.
Analysts say that North Korea is extremely sensitive to broadcasts through Seoul's loudspeaker, as it fears that such messages could demoralise troops on the front lines and residents and ultimately weaken Kim Jong-un's power.
In 2015, the last time South Korea resumed broadcasts after a long lull, North Korea fired artillery across the border, prompting South Korea to return fire.
