The British Army unveiled the new Ajax family of armoured vehicles at DVD 2024: the Atlas recovery vehicle received special attention.

At the DVD 2024 exhibition, which is taking place in Millbrook (Bedfordshire) these days, the British Army has unveiled a new family of armoured vehicles of the Ajax range, which are suitable for a variety of combat missions.

Here's What We Know

Engineers showed several interesting models, including:

  • Ajax reconnaissance vehicle;
  • armoured personnel carrier Ares;
  • Apollo repair vehicle;
  • the Argus engineering reconnaissance vehicle;
  • command and staff vehicle Athena;
  • Atlas evacuation vehicle.

All Ajax vehicles have a high degree of protection and considerable manoeuvrability. They are equipped with a modular armour system that can be modified for different types of threats. The vehicles' defence includes resistance to ballistic impacts, improvised explosive devices and mines. Ajax engineers pay great attention to crew protection: even if the vehicle gets significant damage, the people in it will not be injured or will be minimally injured.

All presented models of vehicles are equipped with MTU V8 engine with 800 horsepower, which allows to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h and move over rough terrain even on mud, sand or snow.

The Atlas recovery vehicle received special attention at the exhibition. It is equipped with a powerful 300 kN winch for towing heavy armoured vehicles and an 8 kN auxiliary winch for additional tasks.

The machine uses a ground anchor for stabilisation during repair work. In addition, the Atlas is protected by a remotely operated 12.7mm machine gun.

The British Armed Forces will receive 38 Atlas recovery vehicles in the near future.
