At the Air, Space & Cyber Association exhibition in Washington, General Atomics presented a full-size model of a "disposable" unmanned fighter jet, the name of which is still unknown.
The fighter is being developed under the US Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programme and is based on the XQ-67A1 prototype.
The main goal of such aircraft is to supplement the Air Force with relatively low-cost, disposable robotic fighters that can perform a variety of missions, reducing risks for pilots.
The unmanned fighter aircraft presented, equipped with advanced technology, is planned to be able to perform various tasks including reconnaissance, attack, support and escort manned combat aircraft without the need for a pilot.
Military aviation and technology experts see significant potential in such equipment and believe that unmanned fighters from General Atomics could change the concept of modern aviation.
US Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said that despite all the prospects of such technologies, they pose a number of risks, the exception to which will be the need for strict control so that the machines do not start shooting down allied aircraft and do not cause unjustified actions.
