Samsung is looking for new sources of OLED panels for its smartphones

Samsung Electronics is looking for additional sources of OLED displays for its smartphones, as the in-house production from Samsung Display is not fully coping with all orders.

Here's What We Know

The company had planned to use 163.2 million OLED panels for smartphones this year, but Samsung Display can only provide 159 million, which is 97 per cent of the required quantity.

To cover the deficit of 4.2 million panels, Samsung Electronics intends to purchase 1 million OLED displays from Chinese company Tianma. These panels will be used in budget smartphone models such as the Galaxy M and Galaxy F.

Samsung plans to purchase the remaining 3.2 million panels from manufacturers other than BOE, which is not considered as a supplier due to ongoing patent disputes.

The panels from Tianma are likely to be inferior to those produced by Samsung Display, especially in terms of performance, but the company has to take this step to ensure stable production of its smartphones.
