BMW i3 Neue Klasse electric sedan prototype spotted on test for the first time
The BMW Neue Klasse programme promises to be a real revolution for the Bavarian brand: by 2028, the company will launch at least six all-electric models. Among them is the particularly anticipated BMW i3 electric sedan, which is planned to be unveiled in 2026, right after the iX3 electric crossover. And now, for the first time, photographers managed to "catch" a test sample of this car during tests on the roads of Germany.
What has changed in comparison with the concept?
Hidden under camouflage, the prototype basically retains the styling of the Vision Neue Klasse concept, which was unveiled in 2023, although it is somewhat "grounded" to the production look. BMW describes it as "clean, elegant and timeless", inspired by models such as the E30, 3.0 CSL and 2002.
The front end of the car retains the concept's famous shark face, but gets larger, more conventional LED headlights and a much more compact "nostril" of the signature grille. The latter already causes sympathy - after too large "grills", which many people do not like in the current models. Interestingly, under the bonnet there is an additional boot, which was half-open during road tests.
From the side, the prototype stands out with extended wheel arches reminiscent of the design of sporty M-models, but the rims and high-profile tyres immediately give it away as a test sample. Other notable details include retractable handles, conventional-looking mirrors, and more classic bumpers.

As for the stern, temporary taillights hint at the final design, but are likely to be replaced with sleeker LED units closer to launch.
The interior remains a mystery for now, but it is already known that the production model will feature a full-width Panoramic Vision display on the front fascia. A large touchscreen multimedia system is also expected. True, the bright materials and four-seat layout of the concept will yield to a more traditional, practical configuration for five passengers.
Here's What We Know
The new BMW i3 will be the second model on the Neue Klasse platform, following the iX3. Initial equipment provides a single-engine version with about 300 hp. Two-engine modifications will please those who need more power. But the flagship version, developed by BMW M division, may surprise everyone - there are rumours of a four-engine system with 1341 hp.
BMW also promises more than 800 kilometres of range and fast charging thanks to a new generation of batteries.
Notably, the electric i3 will be sold alongside the petrol 3 Series, reflecting BMW's cautious approach to electrification. The new i3's main competitors will be the Audi A4 e-tron, the electric version of the Mercedes C-Class and, of course, the Tesla Model 3.
