Media: White House approves supplies of "unstable" anti-personnel mines to Ukraine to deter Russian troop advances

A few days ago, Joe Biden authorised Ukraine to retaliate with long-range US missiles against military facilities on Russian territory.

It seems that the White House intends to break another of its own bans and approve the transfer to Kyiv of anti-personnel mines, which the Ukrainian side has been asking for since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Here's What We Know

According to The Washington Post, citing its sources, the administration of US President Joe Biden has approved the transfer of "unstable" anti-personnel mines to Ukraine. Their peculiarity is that after a certain time they deactivate on their own, which reduces the danger to civilians.

Pentagon officials told The Washington Post that Biden's decision to provide such mines was prompted by the active offensive actions of Russian troops in the Donetsk region and the threat of a potential breakthrough. The U.S. side believes that anti-personnel mines, along with other weapons, will slow the advance of Russian troops.

Such mines are banned in 160 countries around the world, but since Russia is actively using such samples, Ukraine has every right to defend itself with similar means.

The timing of the delivery of the mines is still unknown. This week Washington is going to announce a new $275 million military aid package, possibly including "unstable" mines.
