Games without barriers: EA opens 23 accessibility patents for third-party developers
Electronic Arts (EA) is continuing its efforts to ensure accessibility in video games by announcing the addition of 23 new accessibility patents for third-party developers.
Here's What We Know
These patents cover technologies that improve speech recognition, create personalised speech, and simplify the use of speech recognition technology in computers and gaming devices. These technologies can significantly improve the gaming experience for players with language impairments, allowing them to express themselves more effectively in the game.
One of the key innovations is the opening of a plug-in for the Unreal Engine 5 engine that uses IRIS photosensitivity analysis technology. This plugin allows developers to detect potential photosensitivity issues in real time while testing their games.
Blanca Macazaga Zuazo, a software developer at EA, stressed the importance of open access to such technologies for other developers. She noted that IRIS allows detecting photosensitivity issues before they occur, making games safer for all players.

Kerry Hopkins, senior vice president of EA, also emphasised the importance of accessibility in video games, saying that the company is committed to removing barriers and ensuring that everyone can play. EA continues to hold accessible design workshops and expand its testing capabilities to ensure that the needs of players with disabilities are always taken into account.
This move by EA is part of the company's broader strategy to create an inclusive gaming environment that allows everyone to enjoy video games without restriction.
