Lithuania to buy 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from Germany
Lithuania has officially confirmed the purchase of 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from Germany, the largest defence contract in the country's history.
Here's What We Know
The framework agreement was signed by Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė and German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius during their official visit to Germany.
The choice of the Leopard 2A8, the latest version of the German-made tank, is based on both military and political factors, including the deployment of a German brigade in Lithuania. The acquisition of these tanks is a key part of Lithuania's plan to create a fully equipped division. The Leopard 2A8 battalion will be integrated into the Iron Wolf Mechanised Brigade, the main unit of the Lithuanian army.

Although it was originally planned to purchase 54 tanks, the final number was reduced to 44. Deliveries will begin in 2029, and the battalion is expected to be fully operational by 2034.
This agreement not only strengthens Lithuania's military capabilities, but also deepens strategic cooperation with Germany as a key NATO ally amid growing threats in the region.
