Robot Spot danced to a K-pop song by BTS to celebrate Boston Dynamics' merger with Hyundai: even better than BTS
By the end of last week, Hyundai and Boston Dynamics had completed a deal in which Hyundai acquired a majority stake in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank. They decided to celebrate the merger in an unusual way, with a robo-dog Spot dance.
Simply the best
In the video 7 robots dance to the song "IONIQ: I'm On It" by the famous Korean boy band BTS. And they do it much better than expected - the movements are synchronous and simply fascinating. In general, words can't describe it - it's better to see it yourself.
"There were a lot of problems integrating the vision of our choreographer, who is used to dealing with human dancers, into the software. Everything had to be thought out in advance and clearly laid out. Robots have an advantage over humans in that they easily reproduce the correct sequence: as soon as you got it right once, it stays right when you repeat it. Their disadvantage is that they have to be told every little detail. They don't improvise at all," said Boston Dynamics robotics engineer Eric Whitman.
In the second video, Hyundai welcomes Boston Dynamics into their family. By the way, the BTS band members were involved in the filming.
The deal gave Hyundai an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics, with SoftBank retaining the other 20%. The purchase cost Hyundai $1.1 billion.
