Zoox launches robotaxis testing on public roads in Las Vegas

Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon, has launched a robotaxi test on the streets of Las Vegas. This is the first time an autonomous vehicle without pedals or steering wheel has operated on public roads in Nevada.

Here's What We Know

The initial route will test the Zoox robotaxi on several unprotected bends and multi-way stops. The company will also test its ability to navigate roads with cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles.

The robotaxi can carry four people at a time at speeds of up to 56 km/h. It will be available to Zoox employees during working hours.

Testing began on June 16, 2023, but the company has been present in Las Vegas since 16 much longer. Zoox has been testing unmanned technology since 2019. Back then, the company used a fleet of Toyota Highlander vehicles to map the area and collect data. It drove autonomously and had safety operators on board.
