Microsoft has shut down the Cortana AI assistant in Windows 11

Microsoft has pulled the plug on the Cortana digital assistant in Windows 11, three years after the app was discontinued on iOS and Android.

Here's What We Know

When you try to launch Cortana in Windows 11, you get a notification that the app is out of date and a link to a support article about the change. Microsoft plans to end support for the assistant in Teams apps "in autumn 2023". Notably, Cortana in mobile Outlook will still be available.

Microsoft's announcement of the Cortana AI assistant's shutdown has been announced

Originally launched as a digital assistant on Windows Phone. In 2015, Microsoft added it to Windows 10.

The assistant was deeply integrated into the operating system, supporting voice commands, reminders, and the ability to open apps. The company then removed Cortana from the Windows 11 taskbar, but kept a separate app.

Microsoft is currently working on Windows Copilot, a sidebar for Windows 11 that will be powered by Bing Chat and will be able to manage Windows settings, answer questions and more. The new assistant will be released in autumn 2023.
