The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has set out seven key principles for the regulation and ethical use of artificial intelligence technology.

The CMA has focused on basic models like GPT-4 or Llama 2, which are the basis for many generative AI services. Developers and users of such models should follow the principles of:

• Accountability;
• Availability of input data;
• Diversity of business models;
• Choice of models by users;
• Flexibility in the use of different models;
• Fair competition;
• Transparency of risks to consumers.

The CMA said the principles are necessary to protect competition and prevent the proliferation of inefficient AI systems. Weakening rivalry could lead to market monopolisation and product deterioration, the regulator said.

Although AI raises other regulatory issues, the CMA chose to focus on the competition aspects.
