Dutch artificial intelligence motorist Tim Hansenn was fined €380 for using his phone while driving. However, he did not actually use the gadget while driving.
Here's What We Know
According to Hansenne, he was the victim of a malfunction in the Dutch smart cameras with recognition technology, which record drivers with phones.
Analysing the received photo, the expert came to the conclusion that the AI system mistook the movement of the hand near the head for the use of the gadget. In his opinion, the algorithm probably automatically makes such a conclusion in such situations.
In addition, the person still had to approve the penalty by looking at the picture. This points to an error on the part of the police officer as well.
Hansenn has filed an appeal, but it could take up to six months to be heard. At the same time, he expressed his readiness to help the authorities to improve the work of the artificial intelligence system.
The Netherlands has been actively using "smart" cameras and other means of automated traffic control for several years. For example, in 2022 alone, more than 116,000 drivers were fined for using smartphones.
