Honeywell Aerospace is preparing to integrate a modernised power and thermal management system on the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft
Honeywell Aerospace is working to modernise the Power and Thermal Management System (PTMS) for the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft. The company is preparing to deploy an early version of the PTMS.
Here's What We Know
As the F-35 Lightning II improves, fifth-generation fighters will require an improved Power and Thermal Management System. Honeywell Aerospace will begin deploying an early PTMS upgrade in 2024. It will have a capacity of 2 kW.
According to the company, PTMS will support the Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3) standard and Block 4 modernisation. Australia is expected to be one of the first countries to benefit from the new version of PTMS. A modernised version of the system will also appear in the F-35A for the Republic of Korea. The US State Department recently approved a potential sale of 25 aircraft worth more than $5bn.
PRSM harnesses air pressure from the Pratt & Whitney F135 powerplant to cool the fighter's heat-generating subsystems, including key avionics components. The system supports F135 main engine start-up, cockpit conditioning and provides emergency power. Honeywell Aerospace says the existing PTMS variant provides 30kW of power.
