Germany will deploy 60 CH-47F Chinook helicopters near Berlin along with the Arrow-3 missile defence system
The Holzdorf air base will not only receive the Arrow-3 missile defence system. Germany has decided to send there also CH-47F Chinook helicopters.
Here's What We Know
In 2025, the components of the Arrow-3 missile defence system will be sent to the base, which is located 100 km from Berlin. The first CH-47F Block II Chinook helicopters will arrive at Holzdorf two years later.
Germany has decided to deploy all 60 helicopters at the base. The first batch will consist of three aircraft. They will be sent to the Holzdorf base in 2027 as a replacement for the Sikorsky CH-53G Stallion.
The federal government and Brandenburg state authorities will allocate more than $1.5bn for infrastructure modernisation. The funds will be used, among other things, to create a new maintenance hall for the Chinook.
The U.S. State Department approved Germany's request to buy 60 helicopters in the spring. At the same time, the German government finally approved the purchase in mid-summer. The amount of the deal was $8.7 million. The deliveries will be completed by 2033.
Of course, the agreement is not limited to the CH-47F Block II. In addition to 60 helicopters, Germany will receive 140 T-55-GA-714A engines, 72 AN/AAR-57 missile warning systems and 284 AN/ARC-231A radios.
