The F/A-18 Super Hornet became the first aircraft in US Navy history to receive StormBreaker smart bombs with a range of more than 65 kilometres
The F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet can now launch StormBreaker smart bombs. This was officially announced by the American company Raytheon.
Here's What We Know
The F/A-18 Super Hornet has become the first US Navy aircraft to be armed with StormBreaker bombs. The new weapon will provide unprecedented capabilities to defeat enemy targets in dynamic combat conditions.
Raytheon was able to integrate StormBreaker bombs on the fourth-generation fighter at an accelerated pace, reducing not only the time but also the programme budget. This was achieved through the experience gained from integrating StormBreaker on the F-15E Strike Eagle.
StormBreaker is equipped with an innovative multi-mode homing system. It uses an infrared camera, millimetre range radar, GPS and inertial navigation system. The bomb can hit targets within a radius of more than 40 miles (65 kilometres).
The US Air Force has already armed F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets with smart bombs. The achievement of initial operational capability was announced last year. The fifth-generation F-35A, F-35B and F-35C fighters are undergoing testing.
