Global PC market collapses 29% in early 2023 - Apple fared worst

Falling demand for laptops in early 2023 has forced Apple to temporarily halt production of M2 chips. The Cupertino-based company's first-quarter sales are known to have dropped by more than 40% compared to the same period in 2022.

Here's What We Know

Lenovo is the market leader in desktops and laptops, according to analyst agency IDC. In the reporting period, it sold 30.3% fewer devices than in the base period - 12.7 million units versus 18.3 million units. The share was 22.4%.

The second place is occupied by HP. The company controlled 21.1% of the market in the first quarter, selling 12 million computers, down 24.2% from the first quarter of 2022. Dell rounds out the top three with a 16.7% share and sales of 9.5 million units (-31%).

Apple only managed to sell 4.1 million computers in the three months of 2023. Year-on-year sales were down 40.5%. The company's share dropped from 8.6% to 7.2%. ASUS rounds out the top five. The Taiwanese giant sold 3.9 million computers (-30.3%) and took 6.8% of the market.

A total of 56.9 million off-the-shelf desktops and laptops were sold in the first quarter, down 29% from 80.2 million units a year ago. IDC attributes the decline in demand to the deteriorating macroeconomic environment and excess inventory levels.
