TSMC will not be able to build a 1nm fab in northern Taiwan due to local residents' reluctance to leave their homes to expand the industrial zone
Residents of rural areas in northern Taiwan have prevented TSMC from building a 1nm chip plant. The protests have forced the Taiwanese giant to change plans.
Here's What We Know
A lack of available space is preventing semiconductor companies in Taiwan from expanding. The problem was recently faced by TSMC, which wanted to build a new factory in the north of the country to produce 1nm chips.
There is a technology park south of Taoyuan. In its vicinity, the company planned to build a new facility. However, this would require expanding the industrial zone, which was not to the liking of residents of rural areas.
TSMC refused to build the plant because of protests from local residents. They would have had to leave their homes because of the expansion of the industrial zone. Now the company has to find a new location for its enterprise. The authorities of the island nation are ready to help with the search and the creation of engineering infrastructure.
