The hard fate of mobile games: 83% of released projects close within three years

Many gamers consider mobile games to be low-quality projects designed for an unsophisticated audience.

We can't judge whether this judgement is true, but a study conducted by Atomik Research has revealed several patterns.

Here's What We Know

Atomik Research conducted a research called Good Games Don't Die. Specialists surveyed 500 mobile game developers from the UK and USA and they revealed some interesting statistical facts:

  • 83% of released mobile games are closed within three years;
  • 43% of mobile projects are cancelled during development;
  • 76% of mobile games generate the most revenue in the first year and only 4% of projects record this figure in the second year;
  • less than half of developers keep their promises and release monthly updates;
  • 38% of games do not receive regular updates;
  • 5% of mobile games are still supported by developers seven years after release;
  • 30% of developers find it difficult to succeed in the mobile game market;
  • 70% of mobile game developers are forced to cut costs, including through layoffs.
