Xbox game console sales down 30%, but Game Pass revenue exceeds $1bn

Microsoft has reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2023. As it turns out, sales of gaming consoles left a lot to be desired, but revenue from subscriptions crossed the $1 billion mark.

The reporting period marked the Xbox Series S | X's worst sales since the next-gen gaming consoles were introduced in late 2020. One explanation is the low number of new games that would have driven gamers to buy new consoles. Xbox Series S | X sales revenues are down 30%.

On the other hand, Microsoft has been successful in selling Game Pass subscriptions. Audiences crossed 500 million unique users and revenue was $1 billion. Total revenue in the gaming segment for the first quarter of 2023 was $3.59 billion, a record $3.74 billion.
