The scandal surrounding Unity has led to the resignation of the company's CEO John Riccitiello
Unity has announced a change of leadership: CEO John Riccitiello leaves his post.
Here's What We Know
The official reasons for John Riccitiello's departure are not specified, but it is obvious that the main factor was an attempt to tighten the monetisation conditions for using Unity engine.
Recall that in September the developer announced that it was introducing a new tariff, according to which developers will pay a percentage not from the sale of each copy of the game, but after each installation. This caused a storm of indignation among both indie developers and gamers.
The company soon withdrew the decision, apologised and tried to quiet the situation, but it failed to do so. The main result of the hasty and frankly unreasonable decision was a principled refusal of game developers to use Unity and a call to boycott the company.
James M. Whitehurst was appointed interim CEO and president, and Roelof Botha was appointed chairman of the board of directors. The company will eventually decide on permanent CEOs.
