Even five years after its launch, the Epic Games Store remains unprofitable

According to Epic Games itself, its Epic Games Store still does not bring any profit to its creators. This was stated by Epic Games general manager Steve Allison during the Epic Games vs. Google lawsuit. Allison stressed that the main goal of the Epic Games Store is growth.

Here's What We Know

Epic Games Store was launched in December 2018 and has since become a good competitor for Valve's dominant Steam platform. In order to attract developers, Epic Games offered a relatively generous profit distribution scheme, where 88% of all sales money went to developers, and only 12% was taken by Epic Games. By comparison, Valve charges 30% of all revenue for listing its games on Steam, although it has introduced a flexible revenue sharing system that gives more to developers if their games reach certain sales volumes.

Epic Games has also spent a significant amount of money on third-party exclusives and still gives away free games on a weekly basis. In August, the company announced a new exclusivity scheme, Epic First Run, in which developers receive 100% of all profits from their game for the first six months after release if they make the game exclusive to the Epic Games Store.

Despite all these measures, the store is still not profitable and is funded mainly by the revenue from the highly successful Fortnite.
