The Republic of Korea is investing $218 million to develop a Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile with a range of 3,000 kilometres and a speed of over 12,000 km/h to destroy underground bunkers
We have already written about the Republic of Korea's investment in the modernisation of the KTSSM tactical ballistic missile. Seoul also intends to finance further work on the Hyunmoo-5 medium-range ballistic missile.
Here's What We Know
As with the KTSSM-II, the Republic of Korea is investing $218 million to develop the new ballistic missile. The main targets of the Hyunmoo-5 will be the enemy's underground fortifications. The funding was announced by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
The technical characteristics of the new anti-bunker ballistic missile have not yet been officially specified. However, there is information that the maximum launch range will be approximately 3,000 kilometres.
Some sources indicate that Hyunmoo-5 will have a warhead weighing 8-9 tonnes, but it is possible that this is just a typo. Outside the atmosphere, the ballistic missile will reach a speed of Mach 10 (12,348 km/h). Development is expected to be completed in 2027.
