Germany will give Ukraine an additional Patriot air defence system by winter, which will provide protection against ballistic and hypersonic missiles
The Ukrainian Armed Forces will soon receive the third Patriot missile defence system. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Here's What We Know
The President of Ukraine met with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Germany has begun preparations for the transfer of additional Patriot system to Ukraine for the winter months.
The details of the future transfer have not been specified at the moment. It is not known whether we are talking about additional launchers or a full-fledged complex with a control centre and radars. Also, the president did not mention the type of interceptors.
At the moment Ukraine officially has two Patriot systems. One was handed over by the US and the other by Germany and the Netherlands. According to the US Army, Ukraine has received five modifications of the interceptors, including the most modern PAC-3 MSE.
In the first half of 2023, the Patriot system intercepted about a dozen Kh-47M2 missiles. Ukraine became the first country to shoot down a hypersonic missile. Although in reality, the Kh-47M2 only develops hypersonic speed outside the atmosphere, and during an attack it drops to 2,000-3,000 km/h.
