India has tested a ground version of the BrahMos ER advanced supersonic cruise missile with a range of 450-500 kilometres
The Indian Armed Forces have tested an advanced BrahMos missile. As part of the test, the military launched a ground version with an extended range.
Here's What We Know
The launch of the BrahMos ER was part of the introductory tests. The supersonic missile has not yet been commissioned. A final decision on the readiness of BrahMos ER will be made after a series of tests.
BrahMos ER is a development of BrahMos Aerospace. It is a joint venture between the Russian Research and Production Association of Mechanical Engineering and the Defence Research and Development Organisation of India.
The BrahMos ER will have a range of 450-500 kilometres, which is 160-210 more compared to the basic version of the supersonic missile. It will retain the liquid straight-through air-jet engine, dimensions and configuration, but is likely to get an active radar homing head.
BrahMos is not an original development. It is based on the Russian Onyx anti-ship missile (SS-N-26 Strobile according to NATO classification), the export version of which is called Yakhont. The value of the contract for the delivery of 200 missiles was $4bn.
