Boeing has unveiled an advanced long-range Ramjet 155 direct-flow jet-propelled projectile that will be able to hit targets within a range of 150km

US 155mm artillery systems will be able to destroy targets within a radius of 150 kilometres. For this purpose, Boeing is developing a long-range projectile Ramjet 155.

Here's What We Know

The new projectile of the American company is equipped with a direct-flow jet engine. Boeing and the Norwegian company Nammo are developing the munition as part of the Extended Range Artillery Munitions Suite (ERAMS) programme.

The project started in 2018. There is still no information on when the Ramjet 155 will be ready for mass production. We also don't know what the maximum range of the projectile will eventually be. Initially it was reported that the munition will be able to destroy targets within a radius of 70 kilometres. Now the developers are trying to achieve a range of 150 km. It is known that the parameter will depend on the type of artillery installation.

At the moment, Boeing and Nammo claim only the use of a direct-flow jet engine, but does not disclose information about the design. The same technology used by the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), i.e. GPS, will be used for guidance.

This means that the Ramjet 155 will only be able to engage stationary targets. It is not excluded that in the future the developers will be able to integrate some kind of homing head, which will allow to destroy moving objects. But even despite the possibility of hitting only stationary targets, Ramjet 155 will be a big step forward compared to existing artillery shells.
