Canada to send more Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine than promised
Three countries have recently announced that they will hand over more Leopard 2 tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces than planned. Canada did so the day before.
Here's What We Know
Spain recently announced that it would give Ukraine six Leopard 2 tanks. But Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said after visiting Kiev that the number of combat vehicles would be increased to 10.
The German Ministry of Defence made an identical announcement the day before. Boris Pistorius said that Ukraine will receive 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks instead of 14. This will make it possible to create a tank battalion of 31 combat vehicles.
Canada in late January announced plans to transfer four Leopard 2s to Ukraine. A month later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a special briefing that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive eight tanks along with a recovery vehicle and 5,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition.
The first Western tanks have already arrived in Ukraine. Poland has handed over 14 Leopard 2A4s. The combat vehicles from Norway (8 pieces of A4), Sweden (10 pieces of A5) and Portugal (3 pieces of A6) are also expected to arrive.
