According to Lisa Murkowski, such situations are a demonstration of the need to expand US military capabilities in the largest state. The senator believes colleagues should support additional funding.
Despite the fact that Chinese and Russian ships were spotted near Alaska, they remained in neutral waters. This was stated by the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD). NORAD said in a statement that the Russian and Chinese military vessels did not pose a direct threat to Canada and the US.
CNN reporters have reached out to the Chinese Embassy for comment. Liu Pengyu said the ships were carrying out joint patrols in accordance with a co-operation plan between the two countries' militaries. He added that the actions had nothing to do with the current international situation and the ships remained in "relevant waters of the western and northern Pacific Ocean."
