Lockheed Martin has begun a series of tests on the Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor missile with new software. After the tests, the upgrade will be rolled out to deployed air defence batteries.

Here's What We Know

PAC-3 programme vice president Brenda Davidson said the updates "will improve the system's effectiveness against evolving threats". She added that Lockheed Martin will continue to invest in improvements to the missile interceptor to provide reliable protection for customers around the world.

The MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement) version has a large solid-propellant engine and upgraded actuators. The interceptor is designed to destroy enemy aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

The current test was the first in a series of tests that aim to test the latest software upgrade. Lockheed Martin said the PAC MSE interceptor was able to successfully destroy an advanced medium-range ballistic missile.
