France tests the upgraded Leclerc XLR tank to test the firing capabilities of the 120mm cannon
The French Army Procurement Agency tested the Leclerc tank, which is being upgraded as part of the XLR programme. The purpose of the tests was to test the capabilities of the cannon.
Here's What We Know
The upgraded Leclerc XLR, like the conventional version of the main battle tank, is fitted with a 120mm smoothbore gun with a 40-round ammunition. However, the upgrade brings with it a new fire control system.
The Leclerc XLR offers increased firepower and mobility. It can be used in a variety of combat scenarios. The upgrade added an automated control system that enables it to share information with other tanks on the battlefield.
The 120mm smoothbore gun can hit targets at ranges of up to 4,000 metres. The tank is also equipped with additional armament. This consists of a 12.7 mm calibre coaxial machine gun and a 7.62 mm machine gun.
France wishes to integrate the Leclerc XLR into its overall automated command and control system. The process is being carried out as part of the SCORPION army rearmament programme.
So far 122 out of 222 tanks are to be upgraded. France intends to upgrade a minimum of 18 combat vehicles during 2023. The entire Leclerc modernisation programme will run until 2025.
