Japan launched its first-ever Type 12 anti-ship missile with a range of 200 kilometres off the coast of Australia

The Talisman Sabre 2023 exercise kicked off last week. As part of the event, which will run until 4 August, Japan launched a Type 12 anti-ship missile.

Type 12 is a Japanese anti-ship missile, which in its current version has a launch range of 200 kilometres. Now the authorities of the Land of the Rising Sun are conducting a programme to strengthen the country's strike capability. By 2026, the missile's launch range will be increased to 1,000 kilometres, and later to 1,500 kilometres.

As part of the Talisman Sabre 2023 exercise, the Japanese military launched the Type 12 from Australia for the first time in history. The Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force used the anti-ship missile without a warhead.

The test took place at the Beecroft Weapons Range in New South Wales. The Type 12 missile successfully hit an unmanned target off the coast of Jervis Bay. The launch was originally scheduled for Friday but had to be postponed a day due to unsuitable weather conditions.
