FAA fines SpaceX $175,000 for violating space launch rules
SpaceX will pay almost $200,000 in fines for violating space launch regulations. Elon Musk's aerospace company forgot to send safety calculations to regulators in the summer of 2022.
Here's What We Know
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires space launch companies to conduct safety analyses of rocket trajectories and satellite deployment in orbit. In the case of manned spacecraft, the probability of collision must be 1 in 1,000,000, and 1 in 100,000 for unmanned spacecraft.
The report must be filed with the FAA at least a week before launch. SpaceX did not provide an analysis before the Falcon 9 launch. The incident occurred on August 19, 2022. After an investigation, the company was fined $175,000. The maximum fine in similar situations is $262,666. SpaceX has not commented on the story.
