Microsoft starts testing file recommendation system in Explorer
Microsoft has started testing File Recommendations in the standard Windows Explorer. The feature does exactly what its name suggests - when you switch to the home tab, it shows certain files you might want to open at the top. The feature is currently in very early stages.
In a blog post, Microsoft says that the feature is currently only available to some insiders in the developer channel who have installed the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23403 update and will only work if you are signed in to an Azure Active Directory account, which suggests that the feature is currently targeting business users.
The corporation says it plans to "monitor feedback and see how it works before rolling it out to all users," apparently aware that the feature could be controversial, partly because not everyone would like to see file recommendations in their Explorer (but it looks like the recommendations tab will be collapsible). Another reason for concern is that Microsoft likes to play around with advertising, and at first users will be recommended files, but later it may be something else.
In addition to file recommendations, Build 23403 also adds a few other interesting features to test. For example, it expands Window's live subtitling system to support more languages, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. It also brings its access key system to the File Explorer context menu, allowing you to select options such as "Open with" or "Copy as Path" by pressing the Menu key and the corresponding letter.
