OneWeb is ready to launch satellite internet across the planet - with broadband coming to 48 US states in May

The British company OneWeb has announced that it is ready to make satellite internet available across the planet Earth. The operator announced this after sending another batch of satellites into orbit.

OneWeb recently deployed 36 spacecraft in orbit, increasing its total number of satellites to 618. The company said this was enough to provide broadband to its customers.

The 36-satellite constellation was sent into orbit from India. The spacecraft were launched using India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III rocket. OneWeb has also partnered with SpaceX after it terminated its agreement with Russia's Roscosmos in 2022.

OneWeb CEO Neil Materson said the operator will be able to offer satellite internet to its customers in 48 US states in May. The global coverage will be provided by the end of this year.

At the same time, he stressed that there is no competition between OneWeb and SpaceX. Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service is aimed primarily at the consumer segment of the market. The British operator offers its services to corporate clients and government agencies.
