Apple completely halts production of M2 chips due to sharp decline in demand for MacBooks

Apple was forced to halt production of the M2 processor for the MacBook completely at the beginning of 2023. The decision proved to be temporary.

The start of the year for Apple was marked by a drop in demand for laptops. The US manufacturer was no exception and also suffered on the back of a global decline in computer sales.

It was the drop in demand for MacBooks that was the main reason for the temporary but complete suspension of production of Apple's M2 processors. The Cupertino-based company's chips are used in the MacBook Pro / Air and Mac mini.

Apple had to suspend production of the M2 in January 2023. TSMC, which produces the M2 chips using the 5nm process, did not hand over the silicon wafers to Amkor Technology's factory for slicing and packaging.

Apple has already resumed mobile processor production. However, according to MacRumors, production volumes have halved compared to the same period in 2022. The publication also notes that Apple's revenue fell 5 percent year-on-year in the previous quarter.
