The MT-LB is a floating multi-purpose armoured personnel carrier. It is used for transporting men and cargo. The fighting vehicle is also frequently used as a prime mover for transporting artillery pieces despite the fact that it is not formally designed for this purpose.
The armored personnel carrier has a cruising speed of about 5-6 km/h. It has a maximum road speed of over 60km/h. A 240 horsepower engine is installed inside. The cruising range reaches 500 km.
The MT-LB was equipped with a ZU-23-2 gun. It was developed in the middle of the last century to destroy low-flying aircraft, when the Soviet army did not possess portable anti-aircraft missile systems.
According to Oryx analysts, Russian forces have lost 25 MT-LB armoured personnel carriers equipped with ZU-23-2 since 24 February 2024. Almost half of them were seized by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
