Boeing will build an experimental aircraft for NASA. The development programme is designated X-66A.

Here's What We Know

The creation of the experimental aircraft will take place as part of the US initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The goal will be unattainable unless the aviation sector can be decarbonised.

Boeing's new aircraft will be based on the McDonnell Douglas MD-90. The use of very thin and extra-long winglets with struts will reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%.

The experimental aircraft will have a shorter fuselage and new wings and engines. Boeing has signed a seven-year contract to develop a medium-range aircraft.

The cost of the agreement between the company and NASA was $425 million. At that, the entire project to create an experimental aircraft is valued at $725 million. The rest part will be financed by Boeing from its own funds and funds of the partners.
