Sweden fines two companies more than $1 million for using Google Analytics for fear of sharing sensitive data with US authorities
The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) has fined two local companies for collecting data using Google Analytics. The regulator believes that Google's service could leak data to US authorities.
Here's What We Know
The European Union has a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is an EU regulation to unify and strengthen the protection of personal data.
IMY believes that Google Analytics is in breach of the GDPR, putting it at risk of transferring sensitive information about European users to the US government. The regulator has drawn attention to four companies.
Coop and Dagens Industries simply have to stop using Google Analytics to collect customer data. Both companies were able to get away without a fine. But telco Tele2 and an online retailer have to pay ~$1.1m and ~$28,000 respectively in addition to refusing to use Google Analytics.
