Germany has found a site for an Arrow-3 missile defence system worth more than $4 billion

Germany is buying Israel's Arrow-3 missile defence system. It will be deployed near Berlin.

Here's What We Know

The Arrow-3 system will be deployed at the German Air Force's Holzdorf airbase, 100 kilometres south of Berlin. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius visited it this week. According to him, components of the missile defence system will be based there from 2025.

To deploy Arrow-3, Germany must modernise the infrastructure of the military base. The State of Brandenburg will spend more than $1 billion. Over $500 million more will be allocated from the federal budget.

The initial operational readiness of Arrow-3 is planned to be achieved by the fourth quarter of 2025, and full operational readiness by 2030. It is possible that the schedule may be affected by the war between Israel and Hamas, which broke out almost a fortnight ago.

Arrow-3 is designed to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles (3000-5500 kilometres) at altitudes of up to 100 kilometres. Germany will pay approximately $4.3 billion for the new missile defence system. The Declaration of Intent was signed in Berlin on 28 September 2023.
