Mercedes is testing humanoid robots for production automation
The company has entered into a commercial agreement with robotics company Apptronik to use their robot, known as Apollo, for production.
Here's What We Know
BMW has also announced a similar pilot project. Apptronik said that Apollo is already testing the possibility of delivering parts to workers on the Mercedes-Benz production line. In countries like Hungary, where Mercedes is already testing Apollo robots, there is a shortage of labour, especially for physically demanding tasks in car production.
Apollo, a robot from Apptronik, stands five feet eight inches tall and can lift objects weighing up to 55 pounds. While its "face" may seem a bit strange, its appearance is not unlike other humanoid robots such as Tesla's Optimus or BMW's Figure 01 robot. In addition, other bipedal robots, such as Agility Robotics' Digit, are also being tested in Amazon warehouses in the US.
