Green search engine Ecosia launches its own browser
Ecosia, an eco-search engine that funds tree planting, has launched a new browser compatible with Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Built on top of Google Chromium, it resembles Chrome itself. Users can customise the landing page and remove unnecessary sections.
Here's What We Know
The move to browsers is aimed at expanding Ecosia's sustainability efforts. The browser introduces an affiliate purchase programme that donates funds to plant trees, with a target of 25 Watt-hours of clean energy per user per day.
By promoting consumption reduction, Ecosia recognises the popularity of online shopping. Future plans include improving the shopping interface and integrating an AI chatbot. Initially targeting 20 million search engine users, Ecosia aims to attract environmentally conscious consumers. However, it did not share any data on the impact of browsers.
Ecosia has previously experimented with Google's search engine along with Bing in select markets and uses System1 for search results.
Having planted more than 200 million trees worldwide, Ecosia continues its environmental mission.
