Valve faces a class action lawsuit in the UK: the company is accused of "closing" competition
Every now and then, someone likes to get together and file a class action lawsuit against a large corporation, because as the Mandalorian says, "That's the way it goes." Now they are going to sue Valve in the UK.
Here's What We Know
Valve Corporation is accused of using its market dominance to overcharge 14 million people in the UK. The lawsuit was filed for 656 million pounds.
"Valve is manipulating the market and taking advantage of British gamers," said digital rights campaigner Vicky Shotbolt, who is leading the case.
The lawsuit accuses Valve of "closing down" competition in the gaming market. The lawsuit claims that Valve is forcing publishers to sign commitments that will not allow them to sell games at lower prices from competitors.
Ms Shotbolt claims that this has allowed Steam to charge excessive fees of up to 30%, forcing UK players to pay too much to play games.
Shotbolt accuses Valve of breaking UK competition law for at least six years. She says she is bringing the case "to stop this illegal behaviour and help people get back what is rightfully theirs".
