Hidetaka Miyazaki wants new: FromSoftware head is tired of souls-like and wouldn't mind creating a JRPG or a game in another genre
For more than a decade FromSoftware studio has been firmly associated with souls-like games - the grandiose success of Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring contributed to that.
Japanese developers practically do not deviate from the concept they created, making only an exception for mecha action game Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, studio head Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted that he would like more variety.
Here's What We Know
The Japanese developer said that he would be happy to move away from the souls-like genre and release some games of other concepts. For example, he would love to develop a classic Japanese role-playing game (JRPG), but immediately emphasised that it will definitely not be a sequel to Enchanted Arms (2006), as it was created by Masato Miyazaki.
The head of FromSoftware believes that every game is inextricably linked to its creator and that it is up to the creator to continue the series, but Masato Miyazaki is now working for Capcom and has nothing to do with FromSoftware.
I'm sure many games are closely tied to their creators. I don't think there's a scenario where I would have made the [new] King's Field myself, and the same can be said for Otogi and Enchanted Arms. However, I worked on Armored Core 4 and Armored Core: For Answer - that allowed me to interpret Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon in my own way and develop their ideas.
It's probably for the best that Hidetaka Miyazaki is looking to move away from his own work, as he's certainly got the talent and experience to create something unique and just as interesting as the famous souls-like action-RPGs.
