The White House is concerned that personal data of US citizens may be transferred to China through cloud services
President Joe Biden's administration is investigating the possibility of transferring personal data of US citizens to China through the activities of three Chinese companies operating in the US cloud services sector.
Here's What We Know
According to sources familiar with the situation, the US Department of Commerce has launched an investigation into China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom over concerns that these companies may be transferring US data to Beijing through their US cloud and internet businesses.
So far, there have been no official comments from government officials from either the United States or China. However, the Chinese Embassy in Washington expressed hope that the US would "stop oppressing Chinese companies under false pretences", stressing its readiness to protect the rights and interests of Chinese companies.
Another concern is the possibility of China invading Taiwan by 2027, which could have serious consequences for geopolitical stability in the region.
For Apple, this situation is particularly important as much of their production is concentrated in China and their A and M series chips are manufactured in Taiwan.
