Czech Republic and Germany sign agreement on joint purchase of Leopard 2A8 tanks

On 24 June, the Czech Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with Germany on the joint purchase of Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks.

Here's What We Know

Joining the German framework agreement gives the Czech Republic the opportunity to purchase modern main battle tanks on the same terms as the German army. The final price per unit will depend on the number of tanks purchased under the overall agreement. The joint order facilitates and speeds up the procedures, and the manufacturer's discount for larger quantities can result in significant savings.

The cost of the first batch of 61 units, including related packages (simulators, workshop kits, training), is estimated at CZK 39.8 billion (over $1.6 billion). The expected cost of purchasing all 77 tanks is CZK 52.1 billion (over $2 billion).

Prague promises to involve Czech companies in the development, production and maintenance of Leopard 2A8 tanks operated in the Czech Republic. This includes warranty and post-warranty service.

The order for the German tanks is scheduled to be placed before negotiations on the transfer of technology to Czech companies are completed. The production cooperation agreement with the manufacturer is to be signed no later than the same day as the main vehicle purchase agreement.

It is armed with a 120 mm smoothbore gun that is compatible with new types of ammunition. The Leopard 2A8 also has advanced fire control and electronics systems, which increases accuracy and efficiency on the battlefield. Its high manoeuvrability and speed make it one of the most powerful tanks of our time.
