Microsoft AI CEO calls the Internet a "free resource" for training AI models
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleiman caused controversy after comparing the Internet to "free software" for training artificial intelligence.
Here's What We Know
At the Aspen Ideas Festival, he suggested a "social contract" for the use of publicly available content for AI purposes. Suleiman noted that the Internet actually functions as free software for training AI models, which has led to sharp criticism from content creators and ordinary users.
In his response to a question about intellectual property rights, Suleyman suggested that the social contract regarding content on the Internet since the 90s has been to use it fairly. He emphasised that content available online can be freely used for AI training, although this highlighted the challenges of using it without the consent of the content owners.
In addition, discussing the future of the information economy, the Director General noted that the development of artificial intelligence could significantly reduce the cost of information production, but that this approach calls for clear ethical standards and legal mechanisms.
